PERSONALITY:
The one thing that stands out most about Palutena is that she’s a glowing bright ball of good people cooties. She does her best to smile and see all the good things in people. Being such a flagrant ball of good vibes probably does make her annoying to most people. You know, the ‘goody-goody two shoes’ kind of thing. That said, it’s best not to mistake her want to see the good in people with naivety. Palutena isn't stupid by any measure and isn't one to be tricked by someone into thinking they have good intentions, as shown by her unwillingness to accept Hades reasons for trying to get the fabled Wish Seed. But one of the first things she does against every boss in canon is attempt to talk them out of their path. Even later, she works together with Viridi whom she just got out of a massive fight with. She even stands beside the final boss, Hades, in one level.
And despite her smiles, Palutena enjoys teasing other people and making jokes. It’s lighthearted teasing, sure, but she often doesn't have a problem laughing off someone else being in a dangerous situation, as long as she’s sure they can get out of it. Pit tends to take the brunt of this and Palutena tends to tug on Pit’s leg every time he complains about danger. However, if she’s of the other opinion, that the person might be in trouble, it’s then that panic might strike and she struggles to do her best to assist. Her confidence in her compatriots may be her downfall because she’s not often in a situation where she has to worry and it’s not a very comfortable feeling for her. In fact, one moment in canon, she had to let Pit fend for himself and she couldn't think of a way out and had to rely on Viridi to come up with a way to save Pit. Palutena’s jokes also tend to be fairly piss poor too, by the way.
AU-wise, Palutena also has the mildly disturbing trait to see normal humans as somewhat lower on a totem pole than herself and other mutants. This is mostly due to the fact that she’s known about her own mutant abilities for a while combined with the fact that she comes from a very well off Athenian family. Her life has mostly been a disconnect from actual society. However, her issue isn't malicious and it’s more just simple ignorance. While she’ll often attribute both normal humans and mutants with the same aspects, she’ll always say that it is mutants that have to step up to the plate and take charge, as if she’s unsure that normal humans are actually capable of it. But most importantly, she does believe that mutants should take care of humans since they have the power and ability to do so. Even if humans are not appreciative of it, she would stand between them and imminent danger. This is mostly the same in canon, as Palutena often describes humans and gods are being the same but she always defaults back to how the gods must take responsibility and that it is her responsibility to protect humans since they are so similar to gods. But she never seems to let go of the fact that gods are, in fact, better than humans in some ways.
To top it all off, though, Palutena is a nerd. Even worse, she’s quite open about how much she knows, talking with all proper lingo and using all the fancy words. In canon, many characters often insult her about it, calling her a “Know-it-all” or a nerd. Palutena is very diligent in her studies and doesn't accept anything but the best from herself. She mildly enjoys video games, her favorite being Super Bash Sisters, and spends a lot of time using the internet to read up on recent happenings and keep up with all the latest trends. Because of all this and her niceness, she tends to be an easy target of mild bullying. Not that she minds but she’d much rather get along with everyone she attends the Institute with.
One last thing: Palutena oftentimes makes up powers for herself. She’s rather intuitive but she’ll attribute it to some kind of special ability she doesn't have. “All Seeing Eye of Palutena” tends to be one used most frequently but she’ll just rattle things off the top of her head, despite not actually having it as a mutant ability. In canon, she actually does have these abilities but she does it often enough that I feel it should be made into something she does in AU.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Palutena’s primary ability is to buff the abilities of others. On normal humans or animals, it provides a very minor boost to speed, strength, and reflexes. Where her ability shines is when she uses it on other mutants. It specifically targets their mutant abilities and increases their power and control over it by a significant amount. It’s difficult to quantify due to the varying amount and types of powers but the general idea is that the limits of the powers are a bit over doubled without endangering the user.
She can only use this on one person at a time, however. Because it is a mental ability, while using it, she can see through the eyes of the mutant she’s empowering, hear through their ears, and speak with them telepathically.
The range on it would be theoretically unlimited except for the downside of using this ability. If one mutant is the target of her ability for longer than ten minutes, the boost in powers will endanger the target. As such, she will never exceed that time limit because she doesn’t want to be the cause of someone else getting hurt.
Another downside is that while this ability is in use, a brightly glowing halo appears behind her head. As Palutena has no abilities that support herself, it makes her a large target to anyone paying attention.
With training, the power increase is expected to go up but not the time limit. This is set in stone.
AU HISTORY:
Palutena was born in Athens, Greece to a very well off family. Even as a baby, she could unintentionally use her mutant powers, though to almost no effect. But the glowing halo it caused prompted her parents to call her their little Goddess of Light. Her parents, while accepting of the fact that their child was abnormal, were not stupid. They knew that if the public knew they had a mutant for a child, things could become problematic quickly. So they kept Palutena shut inside their estate to protect her. As she got older, she understood why her parents did this but wasn't a big fan of it.
One day, her parents brought home an angelic young mutant by the name of Pit. They adopted him from somewhere unknown to Palutena and, almost instantly, Palutena and Pit got along. They were like peanut butter and chocolate. Palutena being the older and smarter partner and Pit being the energetic and unquestionably loyal partner. He was Palutena’s first friend and someone she would never want to lose.
Despite their young ages, they worked together to improve each other’s powers and their bond increased along with it. But when Palutena turned 13, her parents decided that she needed something different in life. Despite the fact that they wanted to keep her safe, Greece was becoming more unstable, both politically and economically. Sooner or later, word would get out and their family would be a target for anti-mutant sentiment. Her parents took the only real option available to them, which was to send her to Xavier’s Institute.
Palutena protested but knew that it was the right course. This way, she could be with more people like her but, most importantly, she would actually just be with people. She had to leave Pit behind but Palutena resolved to see him again another day. Maybe he could even come to the Institute when her parents decided the time was right. As for now and later, her parents supported her how they could, anonymously donating generous amounts of money to the Institute and other pro-mutant causes.
Palutena’s time at the Institute was easy in some ways and difficult in others. Classes were simple but Palutena’s lack of social skills bore her down at first. Being a quick learner, she wizened up fast but still had problems simply getting along with other people. She was burned a few times by people she thought were friends but she simply tacked them onto herself as experiences in life and didn't hold anything against anyone. By the time she was in 10th grade, her social life balanced out and now that she’s on the verge of graduating, Palutena is glad for everything she went through, knowing that it made her into the woman she is today.
